Divided We Stand is a 2020 British short war drama film written and directed by Calum Rhys. The film stars Tom Crilly and Sebastian Wegner. Set during the First World War in 1917, the film follows a British soldier and a German medic who find themselves trapped together in a derelict barn on the Western Front. The film premiered at the 20th İzmir International Short Film Festival.
Plot
Set in the trenches of Ypres, Belgium, the film opens with the chaos of a battlefield. British soldier Lawrence Graves is thrust into the terror of No Man’s Land, witnessing first-hand the violence and madness of war. Amid the carnage, he attempts to save a wounded comrade before taking shelter in an abandoned barn.
Inside, he encounters Ernst, a frightened German soldier who claims to be a medic. Initial hostility and mutual suspicion give way to cautious understanding as the two men confront their injuries and personal stories. Through fractured communication, spoken in English and German, they share photos of their families and reflect on the futility of the war.
As enemy troops approach, the future for both remains uncertain. In a final act of solidarity, Lawrence and Ernst shake hands, recognising their shared experience as soldiers and as men.
