Makemation is a 2025 Nigerian AI-tech themed family film produced by Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji and directed by Michael Akinrogunde.[1] The film was theatrically released on 18 April 2025. It stars Richard Mofe-Damijo, Shaffy Bello, Tomi Ojo, Yvonne Jegede, Tony Umez and Jide Kosoko.[2] The film which is Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji's debut production, is the first feature film on AI[3][4] that tells the story of a brilliant young girl in rural Lagos, Nigeria who uses her tech knowledge to navigate the challenges she and her family face in the world.[5][6]
Following its release, Makemation grossed ₦32.9 million within its first four days of release making it the most successful African tech-centred film to date.[2]
Synopsis
Makemation has a strong focus on technology and artificial intelligence, set against the backdrop of rural Lagos, Nigeria. The film tells the poignant and humorous story of a young girl from a disadvantaged background whose life is filled with unexpected challenges and experiences. This engaging family-oriented narrative intertwines fun and captivating moments while delivering a powerful message of hope. It emphasises how innovation can transform poverty into a manageable issue, highlighting the convergence of entertainment, science, and AI. Release and distribution
The film was first premiered at a special viewing at the residence of the US Consul General in Lagos in August 2024 and then at the 2024 Global Artificial Intelligence Summit in Saudi Arabia.[9] The Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu hosted an event to officially unveil and gave his endorsement towards the project on 10 March 2025.[10][11][12]
On 9 April 2025, the film was presented to Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden,[13] and was then released to the general public on 18 April 2024 by Nile Entertainment, who is the distributor.[14]
