Praveen Prabhakar (born 9 September 1976) is an Indian film editor who works predominantly in Malayalam films. He graduated from St. Joseph's College, Devagiri and migrated to Chennai in 1997 and started his career editing commercials, documentaries, music videos, short films and trailers in Chennai before moving on to Feature films. Praveen has edited over 500 commercials for many advertising agencies. He has worked alongside some of the most prestigious names in the film world including Rajiv Menon, Anwar Rasheed, Anjali Menon and Amal Neerad, since then he mastered film editing.

Praveen Prabhakar was born on 9th September,1976, into an aristocratic family in Kozhikode. His (Late)father, M. Prabhakaran retired as the Chief Electrical Engineer and DGM, Grasim Industries, Mavoor. His mother Usha Prabhakar is a retired English teacher. Praveen's twin brother, Pramod Prabhakar has settled down in Bangalore with his wife Prathibha and two sons. His elder sister Priya Krishna is married to Dr. Satya Krishna and they with their three children live in Boston, USA. Praveen got married to Radhika, daughter of Professor P.T. Krishnakumar and Indira, in 2003. They are blessed with a boy Gautam Krishna, pursuing his Graduation from St. Joseph's University, Bangalore, and a girl, Diya Krishna, studying in Bhavans Vidya Mandir, Eroor, Kochi. Radhika, a Post Graduate in English and Psychology is a School Counsellor in Bhavans, Kochi Kendra.

Praveen's paternal Great grandfather Shri. K.P.Keshava Menon, was a social activist,a freedom fighter and the Founder-Editor of the popular Malayalam Daily, Mathrubhumi ,who was honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan. Incidentally it was the illustrious K.P. Keshava Menon who had christened him on the 28th day ceremony in the presence of his loving family members.Praveen's maternal Great grandfather was Shri.E.K. Shankara Varma Raja, a freedom fighter and an Ex.MLA of erstwhile Madras Presidency. He was the recipient of Tamrapatra. His Maternal grandfather Shri K.N. Nambiar,after retiring from the Army Education Corps, took up teaching at The Lawrence School, Lovedale and was a writer,actor,an artist and a cartoonist.Therich legacy and values imbibed from his great forefathers were inspirational and have stood Praveen in good stead and gave him the impetus to move forward with confidence in his chosen field.

Praveen had his schooling at Gwalior Rayons High School, Mavoor, Kozhikode. Early in life, he had evinced a keen interest in the Fine Arts. After completing his SSLC with a First Class ,he enrolled for his Pre-Degree course, at St. Joseph’s college, Devagiri, Calicut University ,choosing the Science Stream, and he continued there pursuing his B.Sc. Degree with Zoology Main. While dissecting animals and insects in the Zoology Lab, Praveen was fascinated by the thrill and excitement of cutting and blending the parts of the specimens with utmost skill, precision, care and patience.The rhythm and fervour caught his interest and the Editor in him was born! He decided that his Calling would be in the field of Fine Arts and Cinema.

After graduating with a First Class, Praveen boarded the train to Chennai with dreams of pursuing a career in Creative Field in1997. He wasn't eligible for a seat in the Advertising Club Madras, being a science graduate. Luckily, he got a placing at Ogilvy & Mather, the leading AD & PR agency, currently Ogilvy through a family friend. In no time he was referred to Next Wave Multimedia (P) Ltd. While working there, he got the opportunity to visit various Editing Studios and he observed and learned the rudiments and the intricacies involved in editing. When the studio bought its first Editing Machine, it was a golden opportunity for Praveen to meticulously learn and fine tune his editing skills. Soon he began editing web projects,Corporate Films and Television Programmes. He edited some programmes for the former Indian Cricket Captain, Krishnamachari Srikkanth. To name a few, Cherio Golden Moments of Cricket for Raj TV, Clinic All Clear Golden Moments of cricket for ETV and Colgate Total World Cup Magic Moments for Star TV.  Soon Praveen was appointed as the Audio-Visual Executive of Next Wave Multimedia. He worked there for 4 years.When SS Music Channel was launched,in 2001, Praveen was made its First Non-linear Editor. He has edited several Montages, Promos, Programme packages and Episodes for the channel. His breakthrough came in the form of a phone call from the renowned Cinematographer - Director, Rajiv menon, who, having been impressed seeing Praveen's editing of the popular Music Programme of SS Music, 'Desi-Cut' invited him to work with him. For the next ten years he scripted success in editing Ad Films. He edited more than 500 National and International Commercials for leading Ad Agencies. It was during his tenure with Rajiv Menon, that he learned and perfected the art of conveying a story in less than a minute through visual media, in the most concise and crisp manner without losing its essence. Besides Ad films, he edited many Documentaries, Corporate Videos, Music Videos, Short Films and Film Trailers.

Anjali Menon had been closely following Praveen's works and was impressed with his editing. Director Anwar Rasheed had seen the music Video 'Nada Nada' Praveen had done for the famous Indian Alternative Rock Band, 'Avial'. Anjali Menon and Anwar gave Praveen an opening into the world of Feature Films, by asking him to edit their film, Ustad Hotel (2012).Praveen started his film career by editing the song ‘AppangalEmbadum’. His debut movie turned out to be a runaway success and it completed 150 days of Theatrical run. The success of Ustad Hotel was followed by Anjali Menon's, Bangalore Days (2014), Koode(2018)^[1] and Wonder Women (2022). He also edited Amal Neerad's movie Iyobinde Pusthakam (2014),Comrade In America (2017) and a few more movies of Anwar Rasheed, 5 Sundarikal(2013) and [[Trance (2020 film)^[2]|Trance]](2020). Soubin Shahir's directorial debut movie, Parava (2017) was edited by him. A recent movie,a Crime thriller of acclaim,that caught the attention of the public, edited by Praveen was Roby Varghese Raj, Kannur Squad^[3] (2023), with veteran actor Mammootty in the lead role. Praveen's debut movie in Bollywood was Shiv Shastri Balboa (2022), directed by Ajayan Venugopalan, starring the veteran actors Anupam Kher and Neena Gupta.
