Stone Malone (born Michael Sean Malone, August 15, 1968) is an American artist and musician. Described as "a surrealist with a comic-book flare,"[1] Malone created his first major work "Masterpiece" in 1993 while attending Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. In 2014 he opened Stone Malone Gallery[2][3][4][5] in the Melrose District in West Hollywood, credited as being "the gallery that sparked the original Melrose Avenue art scene."

Early life and education

Stone Malone was born Michael Sean Malone in Butterworth Hospital on August 15th, 1968, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Stone's paternal grandparents on his father's side, Francis B "Frank" Malone and Irene M Donovan, are of Irish decent. They gave birth to Thomas Francis Malone on February 16th 1942. Stone's paternal grandparents on his mother's side, Sigmund Joseph Palasek was of Polish decent. His wife Louise Gladys Panza was of Italian decent. They gave birth to Mary Lou Palasek on Oct. 9th 1944.

Tom and Mary Lou Malone gave birth to Stone Malone on August 15th 1968. They were living in South Haven, Michigan at the time. They later moved to Grand Rapids and bought a home. Stone showed artistic talent at an early age by drawing with a sharpie on everything (Including the toilet). He was the top of his class in art, but struggled with everything else. At age 15 Stone started playing guitar...he was hooked. Stone heard Randy Rhoads solo on Over the Mountain and said "I have to play guitar like that". Stone moved to Los Angeles, California in 1991 to pursue a career in Music. Later Stone would become close friends with Randy's older brother Kelle Rhoads.

Career

1991 - 1993: Birth of Stone Art

Stone Malone attended Musicians Institute from 1991-1992. Music school took it's toll on him and his sanity. So he started drawing as a release from the stress of Musicians Institute. This lead to the biggest breakthrough of Stone's life. He was drawing little faces and sketches when his roommate said "Draw something was can hang up and frame". This was an Epiphany...the first creation "Masterpiece" was the birth of Stone Art! With the ability to flip the art anyway and see different protectives, it set him apart from other artists. Building up a strong portfolio, he was encouraged by his friends to keep going.

This was also the time when he seen his first Grateful Dead concert in 1992. At the time Stone's musical style was speed metal and Jimi Hendrix. As he stated later "Jerry Garcia turned my Black Heart...Red!" With a new psychedelic approach to his music, it changed dramatically. At the shows Deadheads fell in love with his surreal art. Stone said "this was the first time I felt my art was making an impact". He sold lots of art and became a legend at Grateful Dead concerts.

1993 - 2002: The Lean Years

Stone did session work as a Musician and played in several bands. Never able to find the right group of guys! He honed his art and keep growing. Los Angeles is a hard city to catch a break in. So Stone did various jobs, including being a bodyguard for James Brown. He also working at DeLuxe Color doing post-production for movies.

2002 - 2004: Hotdogs & Rebirth of Stone Art

Stone Malone opened Doggystyle Café[6] restaurant in Las Vegas Nevada in 2002. They served hotdogs and had a Comedy, Poetry and Live Music. Doggystyle Café build a strong following and made an impact in Vegas young music scene.

During this time a professional Muralist came in the the restaurant and commented on a piece of Stone's art. "He turned my life around, and gave me such great advice" Stone said. Because of his direction I became a professional artist. Stone said this advice changed his life forever... "He was a real artist, who could paint beautifully and I wanted to learn from him". He told Stone "Anyone can learn the Bob Ross technique of painting, and sell their art for $20 on Venice beach". He continued "But to be original, where you know the artist the second you see their work. This is the hardest thing to achieve!" After that Stone stopped using Colored Pencils and switched to oil paints. Stone Art was reborn!

2004 - 2006: The birth of Stone & the Assassins

After Doggystyle Café closed, Stone moved home to Michigan in 2004. While at his new job, Stone met Ron Reeder. Ron owned a PA company and encouraged Stone to start a new band. Stone said "When I formed my band, I wanted a group that couldn't break up so I called it Stone & the Assassins[7]"..."This way if people left, I just got new Assassins". They released a basement demo in 2005. "I thought it sucked, it was the first time I tried to sing" Stone would later say of the EP.

During this time Stone re-worked all his colored Pencil Art in Oil Paintings. "It was a long process and by the end I kinna knew how to oil paint" said Stone. Stone also said "The muralist was right, my style translated to oil without missing a beat".

After two years in Michigan, Stone moved back to Los Angeles.

2011 - 2013: LA Madness

In 2011 Stone & the Assassins[7] Released L.A. Madness.[8] It was a break through for the band, and made a strong statement about living in LA. The song Baddmo Funkenow II,[9] was the albums stand out track. It was a nod to James Brown, Stone said "Mr. Brown was a great man and he had a huge impact on me musically". Stone also stated "Mr. Brown gave me great advice once...hire an accountant who is richer than you...then hire a lawyer to watch your accountant...then hire another lawyer to watch them both". Sounds like advice from the Godfather of Soul!

In 2013 an investor bought two painting from Stone Malone. With the money he opened the Stone Malone Gallery[10] on the world famous Melrose District in Hollywood. At first Stone just showed his own work, then everything changed big time. In 2014 Stone hired Jonnie Rojas as curator, he started booking Street Artists. At the time Street Artist could only show their work in group shows. Nobody was giving them Solo Exhibitions. This was a major shift for Street Art at the time. Long time Art critic's loved the gallery's bold freedom. Stone said "It wasn't a genus Gallery owner...I just let the Artist do whatever they wanted...I stayed out of their way". This freedom made the Gallery stand out, Stone let the Artist paint the walls and use the Gallery as a piece of art. Stone worked with local businesses to allow artists to paint murals around Melrose. He also worked with the city commission and his Artists to paint the eclectic boxes on Melrose.

Melrose became the Street Art Capitol of the World! CBS news made the bold statement about the Gallery "Stone Malone Gallery is considered the gallery that sparked the original Melrose Avenue art scene".[3] The Galley included many amazing artists: Stone Malone,[11] Shepard Fairey,[5] L'Amour Supreme, Tina Lugo,[12][13] Sean From Texas,[14][15][16][17] Morley,[18][19] The London Police,[20] Ryan McIntosh[21],[22][23][24] Greg Rivera,[25] Durone, Rene Gagnon,[26][26] MadMan,[27] Alex Garant,[28][29] Moncho 1929,[30] Afrika 47,[31] Free Humanity,[32] Reena Tolentino,[33][34] Karen Bystedt, The Most Famous Artist,[35] Whisbe,[36] Bar Ben Vakil,[37] Cody Bayne,[38] DirtyWetPaint,[39] WRDSMTH, Hero, 2wenty,[40] MadOne, Matt Gondek, Smear,[41][42] The Bleep Bloop, Sek,[43] Leba,[44] Gianni Arone,[45][46][47][48][49] Plastic Jesus,[30] Ben Fronckwiak, T.S. Claire,[50] Haunted Euth, Sabo, Darcy Yates,[51][52] Harley Jones,[53] Lucas Raynaud,[54] Flore, ABCNT,[55][56] The Art of Chase, Daniel Cohen,[57] Phobik,[58] sickid1, Teachr, Ming Ong,[59] Zoro Rodriguez,[60] & TheGossipAndTheChoir[61]

The Stone Malone Gallery held Music, Comedy & Poetry nights very reminiscent of Doggystyle Café . The Music night was called Kelle Rhoads & Friends[62] , it was an Open Mic format with Kelle closing the show. Kelle Rhoads is the older brother of Randy Rhoads, who started Ozzy Osbourne solo career. Kelle is a prolific classical composer, he released many albums and did many movie scores. Musicians featured included Stone Malone, Johnny Blades, Rick Boston, Nikki Lane Taylor, Dionysus, MostArt & Yujin Kamimura. You never knew who would walk in and jam. It was a highlight of the Gallery!

Stone Closed his gallery for personal reasons in 2017. This was just before Covid shut down Los Angeles completely. "I burned the candle at both ends for nearly 30 years in LA! I needed to be with my family in Michigan" he said of the Gallery closing. "I'll be back...but LA is a dead city so my goal is to open my new Gallery in Austin Texas" Stone said with a sly grin!

2023 - Present: Scars & Healing

in 2023 Stone & the Assassins[7] released their second album SCARS.[63] This was a refection of the cancel culture that is hurting creative freedom for artists in America! Stone is looking to start a new Gallery in Austin Texas. He told me it's looking like 2026 will the year. Stone has nearly completed his new collection of art, and in my option it's his best work to date!
