Dror Benshetrit
Dror Benshetrit (Hebrew: דרור בן שטרית) is an American artist, designer, and inventor based in New York City and Miami. He founded his studio, Dror, in New York in 2002, focusing on product, interior, installation, and architectural design. His work includes the structural support system Quadror, the Galataport Masterplan in Istanbul, Turkey, and the Cappellini Peacock chair. Dror's work is part of the permanent collections of museums in North America, Europe, and the Middle East,[1] including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.[2]
One of Benshetrit's early architectural projects was a residential masterplan for Nurai, an island off the coast of Abu Dhabi.[3] Dror designed 24 beachfront villas for the project,[4] which received coverage in Newsweek.[5][6]
In 2018, he founded Super Nature Labs.[7]
Early life
Benshetrit was born in Tel Aviv, Israel and studied the work of Isamo Noguchi, Achille Castiglioni, and Buckminster Fuller.[8] At age 25, he moved to New York City and opened his studio.[5] His first commercial product, The Vase of Phases, manufactured by Rosenthal, received the 2006 IF product design award.[9]
Key works
Vase of Phases (2005)
The Vase of Phases, designed by Dror and manufactured by the German porcelain company Rosenthal, is included in the permanent collections of the State Museum for Applied Arts in Munich, the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.[10] The design has been described as depicting a vase at the moment of shattering and reassembly.[11] It is available in black and white.[11]
Peacock Chair (2009)
Dror designed the Peacock Chair, manufactured by Italian furniture brand Cappellini. The chair is constructed of three layers of felt folded and held in place with a metal frame.[12] It appeared in Rihanna's music video for "S&M".[11]
Nurai (2008)
The masterplan for Nurai, an island off the coast of Abu Dhabi, includes twelve water villas and twenty-four land villas.[13] The design aimed to enhance privacy while preserving a sense of community[11] by covering the roofs of the complex with vegetation. This was intended to shelter inhabitants while providing open space for socialization.[11]
Havvada (2012)
Using dirt excavated for a canal between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara in Turkey, Dror proposed building a man-made island off the coast of Istanbul.[14] Named Havaada, the conceptual island design features six dome-shaped hills surrounding an inverted mound at its center.[15] The proposal includes a 3D urban grid with domes wrapped by residences.[14] Each dome is intended to house a different activity center, connected by cable cars and walkways to each other and to a downtown center.[16] The concept aims to address social, environmental, and economic issues in contemporary cities.[14]
TUMI (2012)
In 2012, Dror collaborated with Tumi to create a collection of travel bags, which included an expandable carry-on suitcase designed to function as a backpack.[17] Dror later collaborated with Tumi to redesign their retail experience.[17] The design for the flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York City has been implemented in over 50 locations worldwide.[18]
QuaDror (2006)
Dror developed a structural support system known as QuaDror. This patented technology is used as a foundation for various projects by the studio.[19] The interlocking L-shaped pieces are stackable, load-bearing, and adaptable to various conditions, scales, and configurations.[8]
Swarovski (2007)
One application of QuaDror was in a partnership with Swarovski for a floor chandelier. The piece features a QuaDror frame with Swarovski crystal strands and is designed to open into two parabolas of crystals, intended to stand on the floor.[20][21]
Materialise (2009)
Through a collaboration with the Belgian 3D printing company Materialise, Dror manufactured and tested the QuaDror structure.[22] The collaboration resulted in a kinetic cube called Volume.MGX, created from 1,200 laser-cut QuaDror structures. The assembled cube can expand to accommodate a light source at its center.[23]
Brancott Estate (2017)
Dror designed a sculptural installation for the New Zealand-based Brancott Estate, a winery established in 1975.[24] The installation uses the QuaDror modular system to form a geometric shape reflecting the form of grapevines.[25] The design reflects the uniformity of the Marlborough landscape. Dror also created a scaled-down version of the installation designed to function as a wine rack.[26]
Galataport Masterplan (2018)
The team of Dror and Gensler won a competition to redesign Galataport, a site on the Bosphorus in Istanbul.[27] The proposal included an underground cruise-ship terminal. The team developed a 3.5 meter hydraulic boardwalk and gangway system that opens when a ship docks.[28] Above ground, Dror and Gensler created a multi-layered pedestrian neighborhood with mixed-use buildings intended to connect the city and sea and provide space for activity and waterfront views.[29][29]
Tron Chair (2010)
The Tron Chair, designed by Dror and manufactured by Cappellini, is inspired by the Tron: Legacy film and influenced by the angular terrain depicted in the film.[30]
