Jai Narain Vyas University (JNVU, formerly known as University of Jodhpur) is an educational institution in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. The institution is the only residential university in the state, catering mainly to the needs of students of western Rajasthan (Marwar). Many of its research and development activities focus on the heritage, society, and challenges of the Thar Desert region, in which it is located. As the westernmost university of the country, research is conducted in border areas with Pakistan.

History

Jai Narain Vyas University is the second university in the state of Rajasthan. The Jodhpur University Act (Act XVII), enacted by the state legislature for the Unitary Teaching University,[clarification needed] combined the state colleges Jaswant and Shri Maharaj Kumar College (Faculty of Commerce campus, Faculty of Law, Institute of Evening Studies, and undergraduate Faculty of Arts campus), New Campus, and Kamla Nehru Girls College (multi-faculty constituent college campus). Shah Goverdhan Lal Kabra Teachers' College, a formerly private university, has joined JNVU since. The university received University Grants Commission (UGC) recognition as a university on 14 July 1962 and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan opened the university on 24 August 1962. Jaswant and Shri Maharaj Kumar Colleges were converted into the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Law, Science, and Social Sciences, while M.B.M. and Kamla Nehru retained their identities.[citation needed] In 2021, M.B.M. became an independent institution.[2]

The name changed from Jodhpur University to Jai Narain Vyas University on 12 February 1992 to honour the late Jai Narayan Vyas. In February 2022, K. L. Shrivastava was appointed Vice Chancellor.[3]

Academics

The university provides education and research facilities to the residents of the region and to the wards of defense and paramilitary forces along the Pakistan border. It offers more than 40 postgraduate programs, 30 undergraduate programs, and five diploma and certificate courses.

Faculties include the Faculty of Arts, Education, and Social Sciences; the Faculty of Sciences; and the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. Within the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, the Department of Accounting is a key unit that has partnered with leading national and international bodies such as Tally, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). This department was the first in Rajasthan—and the third in India—to launch a fintech-based course, reflecting its commitment to cutting-edge financial education and industry relevance.

Established in 1962 and reconstituted as an independent department in 1990, the Department of Accounting has grown rapidly, producing over 18,000 graduates and more than 100 Ph.D. holders, and currently supports 38 doctoral candidates. It boasts the highest number of Chartered Accountants among all Indian universities. The department offers a comprehensive suite of programs, including B.Com (Hons) in Accounting, M.Com in Accounting, B.Com in Accounting and Fintech, Postgraduate Diplomas in Computerized Accounting & Auditing, Tax Practice, and Cost & Management Accounting, as well as M.Phil and Ph.D. courses. These programs blend theoretical rigor with practical workshops and case studies to prepare students for professional success.

Under the leadership of Dr. Mangu Ram, along with Dr. Virendra Tater, Dr. Anil Verma, and Dr. Yashpal Meena, the department’s faculty are actively engaged in research areas such as Financial Analysis, Cost Management, Accounting Theory, Taxation, and Audit Practice. They regularly publish in and edit the Journal of Accounting and Control, a peer-reviewed platform for scholarly discourse.

The department’s infrastructure includes state-of-the-art smart boards, high-speed internet connectivity, and comprehensive CCTV surveillance to ensure a secure learning environment. Students and faculty have access to a well-equipped computer lab, a reading room housing over 1,000 books and a rich collection of journals, and dedicated teachers’ reading rooms. Classrooms are furnished with projectors, white and black marker boards, and climate control facilities aligned with the Bharat Swachhta Abhiyan’s cleanliness standards.

Committed to industry engagement, the Department of Accounting organizes workshops and seminars, such as the recent Financial Planning and Wealth Management workshop, and hosts annual conferences like the IAA Conference on Trends in Accounting and Finance. Its mission is to provide a transformative educational experience that fosters critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and research excellence, while its vision focuses on becoming a distinguished institution in accounting education and research.

The Faculty of Science collaborates with major national agencies including the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Biotechnology, and the Department of Electronics and Information Technology of the Government of India, as well as the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

JNVU also offers classes for working professionals through its Institute of Evening Studies. The Educational Multimedia Research Center produces films for the UGC’s Countrywide Classroom (CWCR) program and has received national recognition for its contributions to electronic media. The centre is fully funded by the UGC.
