Gwynn particularly enjoyed hitting with a runner on first base because it meant the second baseman or shortstop had to play closer to second base to prepare for a double play or stolen base attempt, thereby opening a larger gap between infielders that Gwynn was more easily able to exploit.[1]
Sportswriter Joe Posnanski called Gwynn's 1987 season "otherworldly" while opining that "he probably should have won the MVP award".[2]
Gwynn's death also inspired California Assembly Bill 768, initiated by Tony Thurmond, which proposed the outright banning of smokeless tobacco across all five major league ballparks in California.[3][4]
