Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Ethiopia
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Ethiopia. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Ethiopia|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Ethiopia. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Africa.

- Wow, surprised to see this deletion. This is a public institution with over 13,000 students, 124 academic programs, and 12 graduation ceremonies. It is also accredited by the Ministry of Education (Ethiopia). The article reflects a solid organization with verifiable and encyclopedic coverage. Wieditor25 (talk) 19:59, 10 May 2025 (UTC)

Declined prod. There are 2 third party sources. This one when translated is a small 1 line mention and not SIGCOV. This one is rather routine coverage. An unremarkable career that doesn't meet WP:SPORTSCRIT or WP:NATH. LibStar (talk) 01:36, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Note: This discussion has been included in the deletion sorting lists for the following topics: Sportspeople, Olympics, Sport of athletics, and Ethiopia. LibStar (talk) 01:36, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Keep: the sources would seem to militate against him having an "unremarkable career" (parenthetically, a bafflingly and unnecessarily rude remark to make about a BLP subject). jp×g🗯️ 03:33, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Where is the SIGCOV of this individual? LibStar (talk) 09:51, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- The SIGCOV would be in Ethiopian newspapers from the 1980s. Given that American media which did not even attend the 1980 Olympics considered Kuma worthy of prose-based coverage, significant coverage is certain to exist in those sources as soon as they're digitized, and notability is always determined by the existence of sources, not their presence in the article.
- There are actually five third-party sources linked in the article, not two, I am not sure what the source of that number is. The Salt Lake Tribune source does not meet the definition of WP:ROUTINE because it wasn't planned – how could you plan something like that? – nor run-of-the-mill, as the Summer Olympics only happen every four years and Olympic injuries are usually noteworthy. --Habst (talk) 13:24, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

Subject does not appear to meet the WP:SPORTSCRIT due to a lack of WP:SIGCOV. The article currently only has references to databases, and all I could find in secondary sources was a namedrop at [[1]]. Let'srun (talk) 00:41, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

- Comment; summoning @Habst, as this is their area of expertise. I can't immediately find any english coverage of this person, but then again the sources are most likely to be smaller Ethiopian newspapers from the 50s and 60s written in amharic. I will keep looking for sources. AnonymousScholar49 (talk) 03:32, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
- We don't know that "smaller Ethiopian newspapers" covered cyclists. Not all sports get much coverage in every country at every time. Anyway, Wikipedia's current rules state that the coverage must be uncovered before creating articles, not after. Geschichte (talk) 14:49, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
- @AnonymousScholar49, I appreciate being called an expert, but I am just another editor like you. The subject's Amharic name is ንጉሴ መንግስቱ, and it is used in a few articles ([2] [3] (use webarchive)), but mostly mentions that I can find. He might be covered in Jack Trickey's interview considering he was one of two cyclists to run into him, but we can't say that for sure as it's paywalled.
- And for the record, not to be semantic but SPORTCRIT only mandates that SIGCOV must exist in articles, not from their inception; that rule was not in place at the time this article was created in 2014. --Habst (talk) 13:07, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

- Week Keep - I'm shocked to see the comments about COI, but there is no proof that the editor works at the university. Then again, most of the sources are from the university's website, so it could fall under a WP:SOAPBOX violation. JTZegers (talk) 17:45, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- Delete - Indeed, most of the sources are from the university itself (connexion to subject). The rest are two counts of routine coverage, a dead source, and a PDF labeled as a "self-evaluation". - weak keep public Universities are generally presumed notable, even though here there isnt a ton of secondary coverage we can at least establish that this University exists and trains students. The article is in reasonable shape and has sources, we can improve COI issues but I simply dont see a reason to delete this. --hroest 14:04, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

- Keep. Appears to be quite clearly notable based on the sources already cited in the article. Even putting the others aside, the fact that an African CEO received coverage in the Washington Post and the New York Times during the 1980s strongly indicates notability (both are about the company, but in my view also contain SIGCOV of Ahmed's role in its rise as CEO). This BBC report doesn't provide SIGCOV of him, but it does refer to him as
the renowned Ethiopian CEO (known for challenging the Dergue officials in defence of the independence of the management of the airline)
, which also strongly suggests to me that he is notable. He also has mentions in several books that I can't fully access, including these ones. And there's this obituary written by a university faculty member and this one by a staff writer. I think it's more than enough to pass WP:GNG.
