NY- A multi-cultural celebration of Brazilian culture, displaying film, literature, music, dance, fashion and arts, the New York Brazilian Film Series will screen Aly Muritiba’s award-winning musical drama FUNK as part of its 6th edition. The event is set to take place at Cinema Village on Thursday July 23rd, 2026 at 8pm and will feature a sample of the artistic expressions and diversity found in Afro-Brazilian culture.
Bringing contemporary independent Brazilian cinema to New York audiences, the NYBFS, founded and solo produced by Roger Costa, offers an insight into local artists, creating a bridge of connection and opportunity for these talents to be discovered. For its summer special issue the lineup of performances is exciting and very promising.
Emerging music sensation Lucidreamz will perform a live set presenting some of his own bilingual work and influences on hip hop, funk and rap.
NYU Author Luciana Fisher is bringing her book “Beneath the Surface” which tells her personal journey through battling cancer and making it happen as an immigrant in America.
Funk will be well represented as fashion designer Yedda Ferreira and her clothing brand, Funk It Wear, will present an upbeat and stylish fashion show with some of the hottest pieces for summer.
Directed by Aly Muritiba, FUNK is one of the best reviewed films coming out of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival where it won a Jury Special Prize for Best Performance in an International Film (shared by its leading actress Duda Santos and MC Nem who plays her mother).
The NYBFS has previously screened “Kobra”, “MIlton Nascimento”, “Belchior”, “Luiz Melodia”, and “Elis & Me”. It also served as co-presenter for “Pedagio”, “Medida Provisoria”, “Akin’s Desert”, “Motel Destino” and “Futebol de Cegos”.
